Which car insurance policy?
|
It used to be that car insurance was something you would get from a dedicated insurance company,
either a small local business or one of the few large national providers of the sort that were
always advertising on television and radio. But nowadays insurance has become something of a
confusing industry, as evidenced by the host of price comparison websites that advertise on our
televisions almost as much as companies actually selling something directly. Banks, supermarkets,
and new insurers have swamped the market with new polices and they are all vying for your custom.
It can be hard to choose, therefore, which policy best suits your needs. It’s not very easy to
judge how good an insurer is going to be until a claim has been made, and even reading the policy
document in detail cannot necessarily tell you which company offer the most competitive package.
Reports of insurance companies refusing to pay out claims because of some dispute, whether it be
over a clause in the contract or suspicion of negligence, are everywhere. But in general, consumer
watchdogs such as Which? can give you the general lowdown on an insurers reputation. First and
foremost, do what you can to make sure the company you are thinking of buying from doesn’t have a
grand history of customer complaints.
Checking exemptions and excess limits is also useful, and can be done by anyone so long as they
have the patience to do so. It is surprising the number of people who make a claim on their car
insurance, because they have backed into a wall or whatever, and cannot understand why the first
£500 has to be paid by them before the insurer will settle the rest of the claim.
Generally, the cheaper policies will have a higher excess.
But given the range of insurance providers that we are faced with, how do we know which type is
best? There are some obvious contenders when it comes to car insurance.
The auto-repair giant Kwik Fit offer car insurance (provided by the subsidiary company
Kwik Fit Insurance – visit their website for more information on their
car insurance policies)
which entitles each policyholder to a 10% discount on all services provided by Kwik Fit.
This could be handy, seeing as the insurer doesn’t have to go outside the company to get your
car fixed after an accident, but makes the repairs themselves. Other examples could be women-only
insurance companies, who can offer cheaper polices to less risky demographics by isolating them
from the rest.
